What the Nifty PE ratio is
A company's price to earnings ratio is its share price divided by its earnings per share over the last twelve months. Pay ₹20 for every ₹1 of yearly profit and the P/E is 20.
The Nifty PE ratio applies the same idea to the whole index: the free float market value of the 50 companies divided by their combined earnings, both scaled the way the index weights them. NSE publishes it in the daily index file alongside two other valuation numbers:
- P/B, price to book: the index value divided by the book value (net worth) of its companies.
- Dividend yield: the dividends paid over twelve months as a percentage of the index level.
Turn the P/E upside down and you get the earnings yield: at a P/E of 19.12, the index earns 5.23% of its price in a year. The module on reading financial statements explains where the earnings figure comes from, and the note same P/E is not the same price shows why one ratio can hide very different businesses.

On the basis NSE has used since March 2021, the Nifty's P/E has spent half its time between 21.04 and 22.94. The current reading sits below that band, close to the June 2022 low. The P/B of 2.73 on 8 Oct 2026 was the lowest since the basis change, and the dividend yield of 1.53% on 12 Oct the highest.
The break in the series: 31 Mar 2021
Anyone who looks at a long Nifty P/E chart sees a cliff in March 2021. On 30 Mar 2021 NSE's file showed a P/E of 40.43; on 31 Mar 2021, 33.20, while the index itself moved from 14,845.10 to 14,690.70. Prices did not fall 18% in a day. The earnings figure under the ratio changed: NSE Indices moved the calculation to consolidated earnings, which include subsidiaries, so the earnings went up and the ratio came down.
That matters for every "Nifty is expensive" or "Nifty is cheap" comparison you read. A P/E of 26 before April 2021 and a P/E of 26 after it are not the same valuation. The highest reading in the old series, 42.0 on 8 Feb 2021, was also distorted by the pandemic, which cut profits for a year while prices recovered.
The Nifty 50 P/E moved between about 15 and 30 from 2012 to 2019, rose above 38 in early 2021 as pandemic earnings fell, dropped to 33.20 at the change of basis on 31 Mar 2021, and was 19.12 on 12 Oct 2026.

Why the P/E fell in 2026: price and earnings
A P/E can fall because prices fall or because earnings rise. Dividing the index level by its P/E gives the earnings behind one unit of the index, a rough figure because the 50 companies change over time:
| Date | Nifty 50 close | P/E | Earnings per index unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26 Sep 2024, record close then | 26,216.05 | 24.38 | about 1,075 |
| 2 Jan 2026, record close | 26,328.55 | 22.92 | about 1,149 |
| 12 Oct 2026 | 22,363.35 | 19.12 | about 1,170 |
From the September 2024 record to 12 Oct 2026, the index fell 14.7% while the earnings behind it rose about 8.8%. That is the whole story of the lower P/E: the price went one way and the profits the other. It also shows why a P/E is a snapshot. If earnings fall next year, today's 19.12 becomes a higher P/E without the price moving.
Did a low P/E predict good returns?
This is the question most people actually care about. To test it on the old, consistent basis, I took every trading day from 21 Feb 2012 to 30 Mar 2021, grouped the days by the Nifty P/E on that day, and measured the price return over the following three years.
| P/E on the start day | Start days | Average next 3 years, a year | Worst | Best |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Below 18 | 254 | 14.01% | 6.42% | 30.92% |
| 18 to 20 | 309 | 11.89% | 5.63% | 29.11% |
| 20 to 22 | 344 | 12.13% | 5.75% | 27.13% |
| 22 to 24 | 326 | 8.86% | −5.86% | 25.14% |
| 24 to 26 | 239 | 10.46% | −2.52% | 23.83% |
| 26 and above | 676 | 14.29% | 3.50% | 23.04% |
Read it carefully. The cheapest days, below 18, never lost money over three years and averaged the best return. But the most expensive bucket, 26 and above, did nearly as well. Most of those days fall between 2018 and early 2021, and their three years ran into the strong recovery after the pandemic, when profits that had collapsed bounced back and prices with them. The only losing three year windows started between March and May 2017, at P/Es between 23.12 and 25.23, and ended in the March 2020 crash.
MythWhen the Nifty P/E is high, a fall is coming; when it is low, a rise is coming.
FactFrom 2012 to 2021, three year returns from P/Es above 26 averaged 14.29% a year. Low P/Es avoided losses, but P/E alone did not time the market.
What P/E does tell you is how much room there is for disappointment. At a P/E of 34, the Nifty Smallcap 250's reading on 12 Oct 2026, investors are paying for a lot of future growth. At 19, less is being assumed. That is a statement about risk, not a timing signal. The value factor module covers the research on buying cheap stocks within a market, which is a different and stronger effect than timing the market by its P/E, and the note cheap for a reason covers the trap on the other side.

Different parts of the market carry different P/Es for good reasons: banks earn on borrowed money and trade on book value, consumer companies have steadier profits, and small companies are priced for growth. Comparing a sector's P/E with the Nifty's says little. Comparing it with its own history, on the same earnings basis, says more.
Using the P/E without timing the market
Most long term investors use valuation in two quiet ways rather than as a buy or sell signal:
- To set expectations. At a low P/E, a given rate of earnings growth turns into a higher return if the P/E drifts back towards its median; at a high P/E, the reverse. The calculator above makes the arithmetic visible.
- To decide how to put a lump sum to work. Some investors spread a large amount over several months when valuations are stretched. The lump sum or SIP guide shows what that has cost or saved in our own record, and the lump sum or SIP tool puts your own figures on it.
What it does not do well is tell you when to leave. The record above has several years in which the P/E was "high" and the index kept rising.
How this shows up in RupeeCase
RupeeCase rules do not switch in and out of the market on the index P/E. They decide which stocks to hold within a universe, and the multi asset versions keep a standing share in debt and gold so that a fall in equity prices is cushioned without anyone having to call the top. Large Mid Multi Asset runs a momentum rule on large and mid companies with that sleeve, 42 holdings rebalanced every 2 weeks: model CAGR 34.33%, deepest fall −17.60%, as of 27 Apr 2026.
Questions investors ask
What is the Nifty PE ratio today?
19.12 on 12 Oct 2026, from NSE's daily index file. The P/B was 2.75 and the dividend yield 1.53% on the same day. NSE updates all three every trading day.
What is a good PE ratio for the Nifty 50?
There is no fixed good number. Since the earnings basis changed on 31 Mar 2021 the Nifty P/E has ranged from 18.92 to 33.61, with a median of 22.14. Below the median is cheaper than usual on that basis; it is not a promise of a rise.
Is the Nifty overvalued?
On its own P/E history since March 2021, the Nifty was below its usual range on 12 Oct 2026. Valuation describes price relative to profit. It does not say what the market will do next.
Why did the Nifty PE fall suddenly in March 2021?
NSE moved the calculation to consolidated earnings. The P/E fell from 40.43 on 30 Mar 2021 to 33.20 on 31 Mar 2021 while the index moved about 1%.
Can I use the Nifty PE to time my investments?
In the record from 2012 to 2021 it was a weak timing signal: low P/Es avoided three year losses, but high P/Es often produced good returns too. Many investors use it to set expectations rather than to buy and sell.
What is the difference between P/E and P/B?
P/E compares price with yearly profit; P/B compares price with the book value of the company's net assets. P/B is steadier because book value moves slowly, and it is the usual measure for banks.
