[Path 07 2 of 8](/learn/path-7/)RBI and Monetary Policy[Next 7.3](/learn/path-7/module-7-3-inflation-types-measurement-investment-impact)

Six times a year, six people in Mumbai decide what money costs in India. The Monetary Policy Committee sets the repo rate, and the repo rate flows into every home loan, every corporate bond and every discount rate an analyst uses to value a stock. On 7 October 2026 they raised it for the first time since February 2023, by 25 basis points to 5.50%, and changed the stance to "calibrated tightening". If you hold Indian equities, that sentence matters to you more than most of what you read about individual stocks.

I have watched policy days from trading desks for most of my career. The rate decision is usually priced in by the time it lands. What moves the market is the stance, the forecasts and the tone of the statement. Read those three, not just the number.

## The MPC, who decides rates

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) was set up in 2016 under the amended RBI Act. It has six members: three from the RBI (the Governor, the Deputy Governor in charge of monetary policy and one RBI officer) and three external members appointed by the Government of India for four year terms. Each member has one vote. In a tie, the Governor has a casting vote.

The MPC meets at least four times a year and in practice six, roughly every two months, over three days, with the decision announced on the last day at 10 am. The minutes, with each member's vote and reasoning, come out 14 days later. The October 2026 meeting was the 63rd, held from 5 to 7 October and chaired by Governor Sanjay Malhotra. The vote to hike was unanimous, but two external members wanted to keep the stance neutral. That split on the stance is a detail worth noting: the committee agreed on the move, not on how hard to lean next.

The MPC works under flexible inflation targeting: keep CPI inflation at 4%, inside a band of 2 to 6%. If inflation stays outside the band for three consecutive quarters, the RBI has to write to the government explaining why and what it will do. Every decision is anchored to where CPI is now and where the RBI thinks it is going.

## The key rates, what they mean

| Rate | What it is | Level, 7 Oct 2026 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Repo rate | The rate at which banks borrow overnight from the RBI against government securities. The main policy lever. | 5.50% |
| SDF (Standing Deposit Facility) | The rate the RBI pays banks to park surplus money, without collateral. The floor of the corridor since 2022, replacing the fixed reverse repo. | 5.25% |
| MSF (Marginal Standing Facility) | The emergency overnight window for banks, 25 bp above repo. The ceiling of the corridor. | 5.75% |
| CRR (Cash Reserve Ratio) | The share of deposits banks keep as cash with the RBI, earning nothing. Cut from 4% to 3% in four steps after the June 2025 policy. | 3% |
| SLR (Statutory Liquidity Ratio) | The share of deposits banks must hold in government securities and other approved liquid assets. | 18% |

The corridor is SDF at the bottom, repo in the middle and MSF at the top. The overnight money market rate trades inside it. Where it trades tells you how much liquidity is in the system: near the SDF means surplus, near the MSF means tight. Watch that rate between meetings. The RBI can tighten or ease through liquidity without touching the repo rate at all.

## How rate changes flow through to equity markets

A repo move reaches the stock market through three channels.

  * **Cost of capital:** higher rates raise what companies pay on loans and bonds. Leveraged companies see earnings squeezed. Companies with net cash earn more on their deposits. Capital intensive sectors, infrastructure, real estate and auto, feel it most.

  * **Discount rate:** a stock is worth its future earnings discounted back to today. A higher risk free rate raises the discount rate and lowers that present value. Companies whose earnings sit far in the future lose more value than companies earning steadily today.

  * **Credit and demand:** cheaper loans encourage borrowing for homes, cars and capex, which lifts revenue over the following year. Dearer loans slow it.

How fast does it pass through? Faster than it used to. Since 1 October 2019 banks have had to link new floating rate retail and MSME loans to an external benchmark, which for most banks is the repo rate. A repo move now reaches those borrowers within a quarter, at the next reset. Older loans linked to MCLR and the rates on fixed deposits move more slowly. Corporate bond yields usually move before the decision, on the expectation.

  1. **Earnings follow**Revenue and interest costs show up in results; valuations usually moved first.

  2. **Earnings follow**Revenue and interest costs show up in results; valuations usually moved first.

  3. **Earnings follow**Revenue and interest costs show up in results; valuations usually moved first.

  4. **Earnings follow**Revenue and interest costs show up in results; valuations usually moved first.

  5. **Earnings follow**Revenue and interest costs show up in results; valuations usually moved first.

The 2025 easing cycle is a clean recent case. The RBI cut on 7 February 2025, the first cut in nearly five years, and took the repo rate from 6.50% to 5.25% by December, 125 bp in all, with a CRR cut on top. Here is what the market did in the 12 months after that first cut.

After the first cut, banks and autos led and realty fell
Price return in the 12 months after the 7 Feb 2025 cut, 6 Feb 2025 to 6 Feb 2026.

    1. Nifty Realty**−10.0%**

    2. Nifty Realty**−10.0%**

    3. Nifty Realty**−10.0%**

    4. Nifty Realty**−10.0%**

    5. Nifty Realty**−10.0%**

    6. Nifty Realty**−10.0%**

NSE index closes, price only, dividends excluded. Nifty IT fell 17.2% over the same dates.

Banks, financials and autos did what the textbook says. Realty did not. It fell 10% even though home loans got cheaper, because it started the cycle on a trailing P/E of about 44, twice the Nifty's, and housing demand was already slowing. That is the lesson: rates set the direction of the tide, but valuation and each sector's own cycle decide who actually floats. A rate cut does not rescue an expensive sector.

Typical tendencies, not rules: in an easing cycle, banks, NBFCs, autos, capital goods and real estate tend to benefit from cheaper credit. In a tightening cycle, companies with low debt, stable cash flows and pricing power tend to hold up better, and rate sensitive sectors tend to lag.

## Liquidity management, the other lever

Beyond the repo rate, the RBI manages how much money sits in the banking system day to day. The main tools:

  * **Open Market Operations (OMOs):** the RBI buys government bonds to inject rupees or sells them to absorb rupees.

  * **Variable rate repo and reverse repo (VRR and VRRR) auctions:** short term operations to fine tune daily liquidity.

  * **Foreign exchange operations and swaps:** when the RBI sells dollars to steady the rupee, it pulls rupees out of the system. In a year like 2026, with the rupee near 95 to 96 to the dollar and reserves falling from about $747.6 billion to $734.6 billion in the single week to 2 October, defending the currency quietly tightens rupee liquidity.

  * **CRR changes:** a 1 percentage point CRR cut, like the one announced in June 2025, releases about ₹2.5 lakh crore of bank deposits for lending.

## The RBI policy calendar and what to watch

The RBI publishes the MPC schedule for each financial year in advance. The next meeting after October 2026 is on 2 to 4 December 2026. On policy day, read in this order:

  1. **The vote split:** in the minutes 14 days later. A unanimous rate vote with a split on stance, as in October 2026, tells you the committee agrees on direction but not on pace.

  2. **The vote split:** in the minutes 14 days later. A unanimous rate vote with a split on stance, as in October 2026, tells you the committee agrees on direction but not on pace.

  3. **The vote split:** in the minutes 14 days later. A unanimous rate vote with a split on stance, as in October 2026, tells you the committee agrees on direction but not on pace.

  4. **The vote split:** in the minutes 14 days later. A unanimous rate vote with a split on stance, as in October 2026, tells you the committee agrees on direction but not on pace.

## A worked example: what 25 basis points does to real money

Take a ₹50 lakh home loan over 20 years, linked to the repo rate, at 8.00%. The EMI is about ₹41,822 a month. After a 25 bp hike passes through, the rate is 8.25% and the EMI is about ₹42,603. That is ₹781 more a month, about ₹9,400 a year. If the bank keeps your EMI unchanged and stretches the tenure instead, the loan runs about 12 months longer.

Now run the 2025 cycle the other way. The same loan at 9.25% had an EMI of about ₹45,793. After 125 bp of cuts, at 8.00%, it is ₹41,822. That is almost ₹4,000 a month back in a household budget, across lakhs of borrowers. That is how monetary policy reaches demand for cars, homes and consumer goods.

For a company, the arithmetic is simpler. A manufacturer with ₹1,000 crore of floating rate debt pays ₹2.5 crore more interest a year for every 25 bp. If its pre tax profit is ₹100 crore, that is a 2.5% hit to profit from one policy meeting. A debt free peer feels nothing, and earns a little more on its cash.

**The valuation channel, in one line:** if investors demand a 6% earnings yield instead of 5%, a fair P/E falls from 20 to about 16.7, a 17% fall in value with no change in earnings. The Nifty's trailing P/E went from about 22.3 in October 2025 to about 19.3 in October 2026 (NSE) while earnings rose about 3%. Rising rate expectations were a large part of that.

**Myth**A rate cut lifts every rate sensitive sector.

**Fact**In the 12 months after the February 2025 cut, Nifty Bank rose 19.3% but Nifty Realty fell 10.0%. Realty started on a P/E near 44, twice the Nifty's. Valuation decided who benefited.

## Common mistakes

    * **Trading the decision instead of the expectation.** Bond and equity markets price the likely move days or weeks ahead. A widely expected hike can be followed by a rally if the statement is softer than feared.

    * **Ignoring the stance.** A hold with a hawkish stance is tighter than a hike with a dovish one. Read the paragraph on stance first.

    * **Assuming every rate sensitive sector moves together.** In the 2025 easing cycle banks and autos rose 18 to 19% while realty fell 10%. Valuation at the start of the cycle mattered as much as the rate.

    * **Forgetting liquidity.** The RBI can tighten through liquidity, for example while defending the rupee, with no change to the repo rate.

    * **Using old numbers.** Many articles still quote 6.5% repo or a food heavy CPI basket. Check the date on every figure.

## Monetary policy and RupeeCase strategies

How this shows up in RupeeCase

RupeeCase indices are rule based and do not trade policy days. Rates still shape them. The cards with a debt sleeve, such as the [Allcap Multi Asset](/strategies/allcap-multi-asset) (about 80% equity, 10% debt, 10% gold) and the hybrid cards with 20% debt, hold part of the book in liquid debt, so the rate cycle changes what that sleeve earns. The [Dynamic Asset Allocator](/strategies/dynamic-asset-allocator) goes further: a 40% switch moves between equity and debt on a momentum and risk signal, rebalanced every 3 weeks. When equities weaken in a tightening phase, that switch is designed to shift toward debt. Model, back tested, as of 27 Apr 2026.

The fee does not change with the rate cycle: 0.2% of traded value per rebalance, like brokerage, nothing else. See [pricing](/pricing).

## Questions readers ask

Why did the RBI hike in October 2026 when growth was 7.8%?Because inflation was rising and expected to rise further. CPI went from 2.7% in January to 4.8% in August 2026, core inflation was 4.2%, credit was growing fast and crude was high. The RBI projected CPI at 6.0% for October to December. Strong growth gave it room to tighten without much damage.

How long before a repo change reaches my home loan?If your loan is linked to the repo rate, at the next reset date, usually within three months. Loans linked to MCLR or older benchmarks adjust more slowly, often over six to twelve months.

Does a rate hike mean the market will fall? Not by itself. In 2026 much of the fall came before the hike, as crude, inflation and foreign selling built up. Markets move on expectations. A hike that is smaller or softer than feared can be followed by a rally.
