[Path 03 8 of 8](/learn/path-3/)Factor Investing in Indian Markets[Path 03](/learn/path-3/)

Throughout this path we have used Indian examples and Indian data at every step. This last stop pulls it together: what does the complete evidence base actually say about [factor investing](/learn/glossary#factor-investing) in Indian markets? And what makes India structurally different from the US or European markets where most of the academic research was originally conducted?

The short answer: all five major factors have been documented in Indian data. Some of them are stronger in India than in the US. The structural features of Indian markets, wide governance dispersion, a large and fast growing individual investor base, and institutions still building their share, create factor opportunities. They also create deeper drawdowns. You get both.

## The NSE factor index family, official evidence

The most accessible evidence for factor returns in India comes directly from NSE Indices, which runs official factor and smart [beta](/learn/glossary#beta) indices with published rules and daily data. One caution, again: each index has a launch date, and its history before that date is NSE's back calculation. The live record starts at launch.

## Academic evidence in Indian markets

NSE factor indices, factsheets to 30 Sep 2026

Every major NSE factor index has beaten its parent universe since its base date, on total return: momentum 18.3% and quality 16.6% a year since 2005 against 13.5% for the Nifty 200 since 2004. Over the last five years, the live era for most of them, only value and the momentum variants stayed clearly ahead.

Source: NSE Indices factsheets. Pre launch years are back calculated.

Active funds against the index, to 30 June 2026

85% of actively managed large cap funds in India trailed their benchmark over 5 years and 74% over 10. Discretionary management struggles to beat a rule that simply holds the index, which is the gap systematic strategies aim to work in.

Source: active versus index scorecard for India, mid year 2026

        SEBI studies of individual traders

93% of individual equity F&O traders lost money over FY22 to FY24, and 87.7% in FY26, with net losses of ₹91,685 crore that year. The scale of discretionary trading losses is the strongest argument for rules.

## Why Indian markets are uniquely suited to factor investing

### 1. Wide governance and quality dispersion

The range of corporate governance quality across Nifty 500 companies is enormous, from world class to poor, including leveraged groups with heavy related party dealings. This wide dispersion means quality signals have more predictive power in India than in markets where governance is more uniformly high.

### 2. Large retail investor base with behavioural biases

India has well over 23 crore demat accounts and 13.5 crore unique investors on NSE, and individuals make up a large share of daily trading, especially in F&O, where SEBI found 87.7% lost money in FY26. A large, behaviourally-driven retail base creates persistent pricing inefficiencies that systematic strategies can exploit. This is precisely the dynamic that sustains factor premia.

### 3. Growing but still developing institutional penetration

Indian equity markets are still in a phase of institutional development. Domestic mutual funds owned a record 11.6% of NSE listed companies in June 2026 and domestic institutions together 19.5%, ahead of foreign investors for seven quarters running. Even so, many mid and small cap stocks remain under researched. This creates the information asymmetry that allows the Size and Momentum factors to work especially well in the mid-cap space.

### 4. Strong economic growth backdrop

In October 2026 RBI projected real GDP growth of 7.1% for FY27, among the fastest of large economies. Growth does not translate one for one into returns, but it is a tailwind. For scale, the Nifty 500 total return index has compounded at 11.9% a year since 1995 and 9.0% over the last five years (NSE factsheet, 30 Sep 2026). Factor premiums come on top of that base in good periods and below it in bad ones.

### 5. NSE data quality and availability

NSE is one of the best-quality exchanges in the world for systematic trading infrastructure. Clean end of day data, corporate action records, T+1 settlement and index histories going back to the 1990s give systematic strategies a solid foundation. The NSE factor indices themselves use this data for their published methodology.

**The India opportunity in one sentence:** A large, fast-growing market with wide quality dispersion, a behaviourally-driven retail base, growing institutional penetration, and strong NSE data infrastructure, this is fertile ground for systematic factor strategies, with deep drawdowns as the price of entry. It is why RupeeCase is built for NSE and BSE from the ground up instead of adapting a tool made for another market.

## Current landscape, Indian factor products

The Indian factor investing ecosystem has grown significantly in recent years:

      * **Factor index funds and ETFs**, offered by several fund houses on NSE's factor indices

      * **NSE official factor indices**, well over 10 factor and strategy indices with published methodology

      * **[PMS](/learn/glossary#pms) and [AIF](/learn/glossary#aif) factor strategies**, several SEBI-registered portfolio managers operate systematic factor strategies in India

      * **RupeeCase**, a systematic investing terminal: rule based index strategies held as real stocks in your own demat, for a fee of 0.2% of traded value per rebalance

## A worked example: what a premium is worth

Say the market compounds at 11% a year and a factor strategy earns 3 points more, 14%, after costs. Over 20 years, ₹10 lakh grows to about ₹80.6 lakh in the market and ₹1.37 crore in the strategy. Three points a year turns into more than ₹56 lakh. Now cut the premium to 1 point and the gap shrinks to about ₹16 lakh. Small differences in the premium, and in the costs that eat it, decide the outcome.

**Myth**Factor investing is a US idea that does not travel to India.

**Fact**NSE runs indices for every major factor, and their histories show long run premiums over the parent universe in India too, with deeper drawdowns and longer droughts than the brochures suggest.

## Common mistakes when reading the India evidence

**Treating back calculated history as live.** Most NSE factor indices launched after 2017. Check the launch date before quoting a long run number.

**Extrapolating a decade of small cap and momentum strength.** The two years to October 2026 showed how quickly leadership changes.

**Ignoring costs.** A 3 point premium can shrink to 1 after [STT](/learn/glossary#stt), fees and slippage on a fast rotating strategy.

**Confusing growth of the economy with returns.** Fast GDP growth helps, but the price you pay for it decides how much reaches you.

## How this shows up in RupeeCase

RupeeCase is built on exactly this evidence. Each strategy is a factor rule, mostly momentum, run on NSE data inside a named NSE universe, held as real stocks in your own demat, with one fee of 0.2% of traded value per rebalance. Every return figure is labelled model, back tested, with the date it was checked and the drawdowns shown beside it. The strategy this path links to, [Allcap](/strategies/allcap), is the momentum factor from Module 3.1 applied to about 750 stocks. You have now done the reading. Compare, check the back test, and decide with the drawdowns in view.

Is India a better market for factor investing than the US?Some premiums, such as momentum and size, have been larger in Indian data, and governance dispersion makes quality screens more useful. Drawdowns have also been deeper and liquidity thinner further down the market. Larger premiums come with larger risks.

Can I buy NSE factor indices directly?Through index funds and ETFs that track them, or by holding the stocks directly through a rule based platform. Check the tracking difference and costs either way.

What should I study after Path 3?Path 4 covers portfolio construction: weighting, position sizing, rebalancing and measuring your own performance. It turns the factor ideas here into a portfolio you can run.

What does Factor Investing in Indian Markets cover? The complete evidence base, NSE research, BSE data, academic studies, official factor indices, and why India's market structure makes it uniquely suited for systematic factor strategies.
