[Path 11 6 of 6](/learn/path-11/)Tax-Efficient Portfolio Construction[Path 11](/learn/path-11/)

## Tax alpha: the edge nobody advertises

Two investors earn the same 16% a year before tax for ten years on ₹50 lakh. One trades so often that every gain is short term and taxed at 20% each year. The other holds, and pays 12.5% once at the end. The first ends with about ₹1.67 crore. The second with about ₹1.99 crore. Same skill, same market, ₹33 lakh apart. That gap is tax [alpha](/learn/glossary#alpha): return you keep because of how the portfolio is built, not what it holds.

This is the last module of Path 11, so it pulls the path together: the rates from 11.1, the wrappers from 11.2, harvesting from 11.3, reporting from 11.5, into one way of building a portfolio.

**₹33 L**Gap after 10 years on ₹50 lakh between yearly 20% tax and one 12.5% bill at the end

## The four pillars of tax efficient construction

  1. **Tax aware [rebalancing](/learn/glossary#rebalancing)**Trade the drift, not the whole portfolio.

  2. **Tax aware [rebalancing](/learn/glossary#rebalancing)**Trade the drift, not the whole portfolio.

  3. **Tax aware [rebalancing](/learn/glossary#rebalancing)**Trade the drift, not the whole portfolio.

  4. **Tax aware [rebalancing](/learn/glossary#rebalancing)**Trade the drift, not the whole portfolio.

They work as a system. Perfect harvesting cannot rescue a portfolio that realises every gain as short term, and a slow portfolio still leaks if its debt sits in the wrong wrapper.

## Asset location in India

| Asset | How it is taxed | Where it tends to fit |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Listed equity and equity funds | 20% short term, 12.5% long term above ₹1.25 lakh | Your normal taxable demat: already the lowest rates in the system |
| Debt funds bought from April 2023 | Slab rate, whatever the holding | Often worse than the alternatives for a high slab investor |
| PPF | Exempt deposit, interest and maturity | The first home for long term fixed income, up to ₹1.5 lakh a year |
| EPF | Interest exempt, except on employee contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year | Fixed income you already hold through work |
| NPS | 60% of the corpus tax free at 60; annuity income taxable | Long term, locked; extra deduction mainly under the old regime |
| Gold | Gold ETFs 12.5% after 12 months; SGB maturity exempt only for original subscribers | ETFs for flexibility; existing original issue SGBs held to maturity |
| F&O | Business income at slab | Hedging, not a return engine |

Rules in force in October 2026 for resident individuals. Deductions such as section 80C are available only under the old regime; the new regime is the default.

The counterintuitive part: equity does not need a special wrapper in India. Its rates are already the lowest of any asset class. The wrappers earn their keep on fixed income, where the alternative is slab rate tax.

**Myth**Sovereign Gold Bonds are always the tax free way to own gold.

**Fact**From tax year 2026-27 the maturity exemption is only for original subscribers who held to maturity. No new tranche has been issued since February 2024, so bonds bought today on the exchange are taxed like other gold.

## Holding period: the 12 month line

On a ₹10 lakh gain, selling in month 11 costs ₹2,00,000 at 20%. Selling in month 13 costs ₹1,09,375 at 12.5% above the exemption. The gap is about ₹90,000 for a few weeks of patience. For a discretionary holding, that is often the easiest return available.

For a systematic strategy, it is a design choice. A momentum rule exits stocks in weeks because the signal says so; forcing it to wait for month 12 would change the strategy. The honest approach is to know the holding pattern of what you run and compare after tax returns, not to pretend the 12 month line does not exist.

Fast rotations realise short term gains; equal weight barely rotates
Share of exits within 12 months, model rebalance records

    1. Nifty 50 Equal Weight, 4 weeks**29%**

    2. Nifty 50 Equal Weight, 4 weeks**29%**

    3. Nifty 50 Equal Weight, 4 weeks**29%**

    4. Nifty 50 Equal Weight, 4 weeks**29%**

Model, back tested rebalance records from RupeeCase published data, first record 14 May 2021, records to Apr to Jul 2026. Nifty 50 Equal Weight had only 7 exits in the record. Not actual client trades.

### FIFO and lot tracking

Demat sales are matched first in, first out. If you added to a holding in several tranches, your oldest lots leave first, which usually helps with long term status. Keep your purchase dates and costs, especially for anything bought before February 2018.

### Comparison: high turnover against low turnover

₹50 lakh at 16% a year before tax for ten years. Turnover high enough that every gain is short term and taxed yearly at 20%: after tax growth of 12.8% a year, ending near ₹1.67 crore. Turnover low enough to defer everything to a single 12.5% bill at the end: about ₹1.99 crore, or 14.8% a year after tax. The pre tax returns were identical. Whether the faster strategy earns enough extra before tax to close that gap is the question to ask of any high turnover approach.

## The annual tax planning calendar

  1. 31 July**Return due**31 July for ITR-1 and ITR-2 filers; 31 August for non-audit business cases such as F&O traders from tax year 2026-27. On time filing keeps losses alive.

Advance tax instalments under the Income-tax Act; capital gains arising after an instalment date can be included in the remaining instalments.

## What tax aware construction is not

**Refusing to sell a broken position to avoid tax.** If the reason you hold something is gone, the tax bill is rarely the bigger cost. A 20% tax on a gain is smaller than a 30% further fall in a stock you no longer believe in.

**Over engineering.** Five wrappers, three demat accounts and a harvesting schedule nobody can follow add more risk of error than they save. The big wins are simple: right wrapper for fixed income, equity in your demat, harvest once a year, watch the 12 month line, file on time.

## Common mistakes

  * **Judging strategies on pre tax returns only.** Compare after tax, with your own slab.

  * **Buying SGBs on the exchange for a tax free maturity.** That exemption is gone for secondary buyers.

  * **Holding debt funds in a high slab when PPF room is unused.**

  * **Letting the ₹1.25 lakh exemption lapse** in a year with long held winners.

  * **Forgetting advance tax** on a large gain, and paying interest for it.

## How this shows up in RupeeCase

Every RupeeCase index publishes its cadence and full rebalance record, so you can see the holding pattern, and therefore the likely tax profile, before you invest. A fast rotation like [Allcap](/strategies/allcap) realises gains mostly as short term; [Nifty 50 Equal Weight](/strategies/nifty-50-equal-weight) holds names for years. The stocks stay in your own demat, so the rules in this path apply to you directly, and your broker's capital gains report is the record. Compare indices on the [compare page](/compare) with tax in mind, not just the model returns.

## Questions people ask me

Should equity be held inside a tax saving wrapper?Usually there is no need. Listed equity already has the lowest rates in the system: 12.5% long term above ₹1.25 lakh a year. The wrappers matter more for fixed income, which is otherwise taxed at slab rate.

Is low turnover always better after tax?Only if the pre tax returns are similar. A faster strategy can still come out ahead if its extra return before tax is larger than the extra tax. Compare after tax, with your own slab and costs.

Do I need to pay advance tax on capital gains?Yes, if your total tax due for the year after TDS is ₹10,000 or more. Gains that arise after an instalment date can be paid in the remaining instalments without interest for the earlier ones.

## What to remember

  * Tax alpha comes from location, holding period, harvesting and rebalancing together.

  * Equity is already lightly taxed; wrappers matter most for fixed income.

  * The 12 month line is worth 7.5 points; know your strategy's holding pattern.

  * SGB maturity exemption is now for original subscribers only.

  * Compare strategies after tax, not before.
