# What does 1.8%
TER actually cost you?

          Race a mutual fund, a PMS and RupeeCase over your own horizon, in rupees. Same return before fees; only the fee differs.

            * **1.8% a year**a fund TER, on everything

            * **2% plus 20%**a PMS, above a 10% hurdle

        01The race

## Same market.
Different fees.

      Every line earns the same return before fees. Move a slider and the race redraws: amount, horizon, rebalances a year and how much of the portfolio each rebalance turns over.

          Less in fees than the mutual fund, over 20 years

    An illustration, not a forecast. Fees paid are the gap between a no fee portfolio and each one, on the same return before fees. A Category III AIF at about 2% plus 20% above the same hurdle draws the same line as the PMS. Your actual fees depend on your fund, PMS, broker and strategy.

## Where 0.78% comes from.

        **30%**turned over each time
        **13**rebalances a year
        **0.2%**of traded value
        **0.78%**of the portfolio a year

        On ₹1,00,000, RupeeCase**₹780**a year, only because trades executed

        On ₹1,00,000, a 1.8% TER fund**₹1,800**a year, whether or not anything traded

        Mutual fund

        Net return = return − **1.8%**

        Charged on the whole portfolio every year. Funds range from about 0.3% to 2.5%; the race uses 1.8%, a typical active equity fund.

        PMS, and AIF Category III

        Drag = **2%** + **20%** × (return − 10%)

        A fixed fee plus a share of the return above a 10% hurdle. At 14% that is 2.8% a year. Structures vary by manager.

        RupeeCase

        Drag = turnover × rebalances × **0.2%**

        No share of assets, no performance fee, no exit load, no subscription. A rebalance that changes nothing costs nothing.

      * **Lump sum** no further contributions

      * **No taxes** the same for all three

      * **Fees as drag** each one comes off the yearly return

      * **Your inputs** rebalances and turnover are yours, not a forecast

## Every charge,
on your ledger.

        The portfolio ledger lists money in and out, the charges and the turnover of each rebalance, so the 0.2% is something you can check line by line.

        04Questions

## Common
questions.

### How much does a 1.8% expense ratio cost over time?
It is charged on the whole portfolio every year, so it compounds against you for as long as you hold. Use the calculator above to see the rupee cost for your own amount, horizon and return, next to a PMS and RupeeCase.

### How does the calculator work out the RupeeCase fee?
RupeeCase charges 0.2% of the value that actually trades at each rebalance. The calculator multiplies your rebalances per year by the share of the portfolio turned over each time and by 0.2%, then deducts that from the return the same way it deducts a fund TER.

### Is RupeeCase always cheaper than a mutual fund?
No. At high turnover and a fast rebalance cadence, the traded value can add up to more than a 1.8% TER. The calculator shows which side the difference falls on for your settings. A slower cadence or a lower turnover lowers the RupeeCase cost.

### What assumptions does the calculator make?
A lump sum with no extra contributions, no taxes, and every fee modelled as an annual drag on the return. Rebalance count and turnover are your assumptions, not a RupeeCase forecast. A rebalance that changes nothing costs nothing.
